Research and Mentorship Program (RAMP)
By 2050, it’s estimated that 20% of the US population will be 65 or older, exacerbating the current shortage of geriatricians and neurologists. UCI MIND is tackling this issue by collaborating with UCI School of Medicine to encourage medical students to specialize in geriatric medicine. One such initiative is the RAMP program, a summer research mentorship that pairs 2nd-year medical students with UCI faculty studying neurodegenerative diseases.
In partnership with UCI School of Medicine, UCI MIND launched the Research And Mentorship Program (RAMP) for medical students in the summer of 2020. The program, made possible by support from community philanthropist Dr. Lorna Carlin and the nonprofit HFC led by Seth Rogen and Lauren Miller Rogen, pairs medical students with UCI MIND faculty mentors to inspire scientific ideas and future careers in dementia research and care. More than two dozen medical students have participated in the program; many of whom have been given the opportunity to publish or present their results.
ICTS Summer Medical Student Alzheimer’s and Aging Research Training (SMAART) T-35 Training Program
The UC Irvine Institute for Clinical and Translational Science (ICTS) NIA T-35 training program works in conjunction with RAMP to provide financial support for students while they participate in the summer program. The program also provides funds to help facilitate the research projects.
