Dr. Oswald Steward Awarded Prestigious Kavli Prize

Congratulations to Dr. Oswald Steward!

Dr. Steward, Director & Distinguished Professor, Departments of Anatomy, Neurobiology, Behavior, and Neurosurgery at UC Irvine, was recently awarded the Kavli Prize. The Kavli Prize is a prestigious award that recognizes scientists whose discoveries transform astrophysics, nanoscience, or neuroscience.

Dr. Steward was recognized for his groundbreaking research on local protein translation, a process where cells create proteins where they are needed rather than building proteins in a central location. This discovery has transformed our understanding of neuronal plasticity and brain development. His work has also advanced research in neurodevelopmental disabilities such as fragile X syndrome and autism spectrum disorder, neurodegenerative diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and brain and spinal cord injury.
