UC Irvine’s Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (UCI MIND) has been at the forefront of Alzheimer’s research since 1984. The breakthroughs at UCI MIND don’t happen without remarkable people: study participants, brain donors, and researchers who make it possible.
Among them is Julie Moore. At 55, Julie was diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer’s disease and became one of the first participants in UCI MIND’s START Study, a double-blind, nationwide clinical trial testing a drug designed to protect the brain synapses key to forming memories. With both her parents and her father-in-law lost to Alzheimer’s, Julie’s motivation is deeply personal, she’s doing it for her daughter and for generations to come.
Julie’s story is one of many that remind us why UCI MIND’s work matters. With about 1,200 donated brain samples, a longitudinal study running since 1988, and pioneering research on the link between Down syndrome and Alzheimer’s disease, UCI MIND is turning decades of science into real hope.
